Smartphone Filmmaking: Shoot and Edit Cinematic Videos

Learn to make videos that look and sound intentional using only the phone you already own. We cover camera settings, locking exposure and focus, working with natural light, recording clean audio, composing shots, moving the camera with purpose, covering a scene from multiple angles and editing it into a short, polished film.

This class is for beginners, hobbyists, small business owners and anyone who wants to tell stories with video without buying expensive gear. You do not need any filmmaking experience. Optional accessories like a small tripod or a clip-on microphone are discussed, but every exercise can be completed with a phone and a free editing app.

By the end you will have planned, shot and edited a complete 30 to 60 second short film about an everyday moment, using a shot list, a five-shot sequence, deliberate camera moves, layered sound and consistent color. You will also have a repeatable workflow you can apply to travel videos, product clips and personal projects.

Create a 30 to 60 second cinematic short about an ordinary moment from your day, such as a morning routine, a walk or a hobby.

• Write a shot list with at least six shots, including a five-shot sequence.
• Shoot with locked exposure and focus, using natural light deliberately.
• Record clean audio and 20 seconds of room tone.
• Edit with at least one cut on action and one J or L cut, add music and a consistent color look, and export for your chosen platform.
