Phone Photography: Master Composition and Light

Your phone is a capable camera. What usually separates a forgettable snapshot from a photo people stop to look at is not the gear but two skills: where you put things in the frame and how you use light. This class teaches both with practical exercises you can do on any modern iPhone or Android phone.

It is for beginners and casual shooters who want their travel, food, portrait, and everyday photos to look intentional. You do not need extra apps, lenses, or accessories. We will use the built-in camera app and focus on habits you can apply the next time you take your phone out of your pocket.

You will learn to control focus and exposure, compose with the rule of thirds, leading lines, framing, and negative space, change your perspective, read the direction and quality of light, and handle tricky situations like backlight and low light. Along the way you will build a small, cohesive photo series.

Create a cohesive series of six photos on a single theme of your choice, such as your neighborhood, a morning routine, a friend, or one color.

• Use at least three different composition techniques from the class
• Include at least one photo in side light and one in soft light
• Shoot from at least two unusual perspectives
• Apply consistent, light editing across the set
• Share the six images with a short note on the choices you made for each
